One of the world’s first true edge-to-edge smartphone screens should be presented in New York tomorrow, as Sprint brings the Sharp Aquos Crystal to the western world.
Looks like Sharp’s gorgeous bezel-free Aquos Crystal smartphone could be hitting America tomorrow, if the latest rumours are on the money.
US carrier Sprint has sent out invites to a big New York smartphone launch tomorrow (Tuesday August 19th), and the crystal design adorning the invites, along with the fact that Sprint’s owner Softbank has already launched the Sharp phone in Japan, suggests that the Aquos could be the big reveal.
Many phones advertise themselves as edge-to-edge, something that got popular around the time of the Motorola Razr i, but the Sharp Aquos Crystal is one of the only mobiles to actually deliver on that promise. The 5-inch screen really does fill the front panel, which should help it fit more easily in the palm than fellow straight-edged blowers like the Sony Xperia Z2.
That screen might not rock the same 1080p sharpness of the latest premium phones, but at 720p it’s no slouch either. The rest of the specs are reminiscent of the Motorola Moto G and other mid-rangers, with a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of storage packed inside.
However, if you demand a bit more oomph, there’s also a 5.5-inch model called the Sharp Aquos Crystal XL. This bigger beast rocks a Full HD 1080p display, a 2.3GHz SnapDragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Both phones alsol boast Harmon Kardon speakers (although so did many Toshiba tablets and netbooks of yesteryear, and we’re buggered if we noticed any difference).
Here’s hoping the Sharp Aquos Crystal smartphones hit the UK at some point, as we’re already salivating over that gorgeous design. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
