Sticking to what it does best, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 is designed for email on the go and comes packed with features. While many smart phone fans are running to the touchscreen hills, the Bold offers a strong alternative.
What we like
The Bold 9000’s screen is one of the sharpest and brightest screens we’ve ever seen. Underneath the crisp display sits an equally impressive keypad that is a joy to type long text messages or emails on. You really get the feeling that RIM has put a lot of love into the Bold’s keypad.
For years we cried about RIM devices boasting one feature but lacking another, the Bold though has it all. You can browse the Web using HSDPA or Wi-Fi, navigate town using GPS and there’s a standard 3.5mm headphone jack for listening to music. At the heart of this feature-packed phone is a robust email offering that supports all the major clients, including corporate email accounts, and is easy to set up. Overall the Bold is fast, great for email and worthy of its name.
What we don’t like
It’s not a small phone and some people may find it too wide for their pockets. The 2-megapixel camera is very basic and lets the rest of the phone down. If you want to take the odd shot for an MMS message then the camera is fine but if you’re looking for a camera phone to replace your standalone camera, this isn’t it. Even though RIM has refurbished the interface, it’s confusing at times and less experience BlackBerry users may find they need to search on Google for user tips.
Conclusion
RIM has packed all of its experience into the Bold and it shows. A good screen and keypad tie together a fantastic phone. We recommend this for work and play but warn you that it’s not small, the camera isn’t great and there’s no fancy touchscreen.
