As well as hearing that the Sony Xperia S won’t be coming to Vodafone, we were also told of plans to range the BlackBerry Bold 9790 were in the works.
While Vodafone had previously said that it’d be selling the Bold 9790, the news is that the BlackBerry phone will be coming to consumer contracts; previously Vodafone had only announced the Bold 9790 as part of its enterprise/business range.
In November last year Vodafone told us that “we don’t plan to offer it as part of our broader consumer smartphone line-up.” Looks like that’s not the case now.
The BlackBerry Bold 9790 is basically a slimmed down version of the Bold 9900. It’s got many of the same key specs and features, but is a little smaller and doesn’t have the same premium build as the Bold 9900.
The processor is a little slower, 1GHz, compared to 1.2GHz and the screen at 2.45-inches is a little smaller than the Bold 9900’s 2.8-inch screen. But you do get the same camera and storage; 5-megapixels and 8GB (expandable up to 32GB).
There’s also an NFC chip which, once you’re updated to BlackBerry OS 7.1, will allow you to make use of BlackBerry Tag and in the future you ought to be all set up to make mobile payments. OS 7.1 will also allow you to turn your Bold 9790 into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. A pretty neat trick, as owners of Android phones will tell you.
We weren’t able to get any pricing information sadly, but we’re expecting that to be announced soon.
