Blackberry DTEK60 in a nutshell: Blackberry launches new Android phone

Blackberry has just launched the DTEK60, its shiny new Android smartphone which improves on the recently-released Blackberry DTEK50 in a number of key areas. Here’s everything you need to know about the Blackberry DTEK60 including specs, UK pricing, release date and more.

What is the Blackberry DTEK60?

Blackberry has shifted away from producing BB10 mobiles in the past two years, instead producing rather good Android smartphones that add in the best BB10 features. The Blackberry Priv came first, impressing us with its excellent hardware and feature-packed user experience.

Then we had the rather oddly-named Blackberry DTEK50 earlier in 2016, which trimmed back the premium specs of the Priv for a more affordable cost. The DTEK50 was a decent handset, again boasting a funky mash-up of Android and BB10. However, the lack of a fingerprint sensor and those cut-down specs meant it fell short of the excellent OnePlus 3, which offered a lot more for the same price.

Thankfully the DTEK60 is another premium Blackberry Android device, just like the Priv. It’s the first BB phone to pack a fingerprint sensor, as well as the kind of features usually found on other flagship mobiles.

For instance, you get a spacious and super-sharp 5.5-inch Quad HD screen, comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The Snapdragon 820 processor should provide smooth everyday performance and there’s a 21-megapixel camera with Phase Detection Autofocus for capturing detail-packed shots.

Blackberry DTEK60 UK price and release date

The Blackberry DTEK60 will cost £475 SIM-free and will be released here in the UK in November 2016. We’re yet to hear an exact date, so stay tuned.

You’ll be able to buy the DTEK60 through Carphone Warehouse, and the phone will be available through Carphone’s iD network. You’ll also be able to pick up the DTEK60 through Blackberry’s online store, ShopBlackberry.com, with customers receiving a free Pocket Case and Rapid Charger.

Online stores like Clove and Mobile Phones Direct will also be stocking the DTEK60 here in the UK.

Should I buy the DTEK60, DTEK50 or Priv?

The DTEK50 is a stripped-down experience compared with the DTEK60 and Priv. You can still expect dependable everyday performance and a solid all-round experience, but the battery life isn’t as strong and the cameras are also weaker. If that doesn’t bother you and your budget is tight, then the DTEK50 might be your best bet.

The DTEK60 offers a performance upgrade over last year’s Priv, as well as a more streamlined design. Gone is the Priv’s physical keyboard, which could be a stumbling point for some. However, the trade-off is a far slimmer handset at just 7mm thick. You also get a fingerprint sensor on the DTEK60, something missing from the other phones here.
