Blackberry Playbook OS 2 update delayed until 2012, no BBM support

Fans of RIM’s Playbook tablet will have to wait until Feb 2012 to get their hands on the latest version of the operating system.

According the the Telegraph, David Smith RIM said: “As much as we’d love to have it in your hands today, we’ve made the difficult decision to wait to launch BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 until we are confident we have fully met the expectations of our developers, enterprise customers and end-users.”

In additio,  the next version of the operating system will not support Blackberry Messenger, Smith cited. ‘We are committed to developing a seamless BBM solution that fully delivers on the powerful, push-based messaging capabilities recognized today by BlackBerry users around the world and we’re still working on it,” he said.

Although we really like the Playbook, it’s compact, fast and poweful, however it’s struggled against the iPad and it’s huge apply library. In addition RIM has been criticised for not putting its native email client (one of its best and more liked features) on the Playbook.

One of the highlights of the OS 2.0 is the ability to run Android apps, something that could attract Android users to the Playbook.

Recently Carphone Warhouse slashed the price of the Playbook by £150, creating a new starting price point of £249.

It’s certainly been a bad month for RIM, following the email and BBM outages earlier last month
