Carphone Warehouse: 1 million Android smartphones sold in Europe

Carphone Warehouse has announced that sales of Android smartphones in its stores and online have crossed the prestigious 1 million mark in Europe.

Citing the success of high-end smartphones from last year such as HTC’s Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S, a Carphone Warehouse spokesperson said “The speed with which Android has stormed the market is phenomenal,” adding that “Year on year growth is well over 2000%”.

“It’s no surprise that Android smartphones have become the smartphone of choice for so many of our customers. Hitting one million Android sales in Europe is great as it proves that our dedication to offering an extensive range and securing top exclusives has really benefitted not just us, but our customers too.”

The press release also points to the interest generated by the likes of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, LG Optimus 3D and the Samsung Galaxy S II, suggesting that these phones will be coming to Carphone Warehouse in the near future.

In January, Carphone Warehouse released figures showing that sales of Android phones were overtaking those of iPhones – hardly surprising when you consider the price point of Apple’s wonderphones compared to the many cheaper Android alternatives out there.

It’d be interesting to see if one or two high-end Android phones, like the Nexus S and the Incredible S (a Carphone exclusive) would compare one-on-one to sales of the iPhone 4.
