Dash Charge Review: OnePlus 3 Dash Charge vs Quick Charge 3.0 charging test

The OnePlus 3 boasts a very cool feature that you might not have heard of: Dash Charge, a super-fast battery charging tech which according to OnePlus is even better than Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0. Here’s our full Dash Charge review and test results, including how hot the phone gets when charging.

And if you want to know our full verdict on this impressively feature-rammed phone, check out our in-depth OnePlus 3 review.

What is Dash Charge?

Dash Charge. It might sound like some crazy old Spectrum game but it’s actually the OnePlus 3’s super-snazzy battery charging tech, which OnePlus claims can give you more than 60 percent charge in just 30 minutes. Not just that, but the OnePlus 3 is also said to remain perfectly cool during charge; no issues with overheating here.

If true, that means Dash Charge is even faster than Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 tech, which is found on some of the biggest premium Android phones like the HTC 10. So we decided to test Dash Charge out on our OnePlus 3 review sample and pit it against HTC’s flagship phone, to see if Dash Charge really is better than Quick Charge.

Dash Charge vs Quick Charge 3.0: How fast is Dash Charge?

In this test, we charged up the HTC 10 and OnePlus 3 using their respective plugs – QuickCharge 3.0 for the HTC 10 and Dash Charge for the OnePlus. Both handsets were dead at the start and we timed how long they took to reach full charge. Both phones pack a 3,000mAh battery, to make it a perfectly fair test.

After just 10 minutes we already saw the impact that Dash Charge makes. The OnePlus 3 was up to 21 percent charge, while the HTC 10 was in second place with 15 percent. After half an hour, the OnePlus’ lead had extended. Dash Charge had given us 63 percent charge (so over 60 percent as promised), while the HTC 10 wasn’t even halfway charged at 41 percent.

The OnePlus 3 continued to steam ahead, and after one hour at the plug it was almost full at 96 percent. Full charge was reached after 72 minutes, while the HTC 10 was still stuck on 90 percent.

Does Dash Charge battery charging make the OnePlus 3 hot?

In one word, no. Even after a full Dash Charge, the OnePlus 3 remains impressively cool, as if it had been switched off and sat on a desk the entire time. By contrast, the HTC 10 was quite toasty after an hour and twenty minutes of Quick Charge action.

That means you can happily charge the OnePlus 3 and game or film video at the same time, without worrying about the phone overheating.

How good is the OnePlus 3’s battery life?

We also tested out the OnePlus 3’s battery life with our media test, in which we stream YouTube footage non-stop over WiFi and time how long the battery takes to deplete.

The good news is, the OnePlus 3 did very well indeed. An hour of video action took the battery down just nine percent, and the OnePlus 3 kept this performance up, lasting for ten hours before biting the dust. That’s as strong as the Samsung Galaxy S7, the best performer in our media test so far in 2016.
