Carphone Warehouse offers cheapest UK 4G and free roaming on new ‘ID’ network

The Carphone Warehouse has launched its new iD mobile network, which offers great-value 4G deals, free roaming in 22 countries and flexible plans.

Dixon Carphone will offer users the lowest priced 4G-centric plan on the market, including free data roaming for holiday makers. And the new ID network also aims to afford users more control over how they spend their money and how long they remain tied in to a contract.

Carphone Warehouse has isolated what it considers to be the three main headaches which afflict UK mobile users: “bill shock”, “uncertainty when using your phone abroad” and “flexibility”, with all three to be eliminated for customers on its ID network.

The network’s contracts will be controlled and capped, solving the issue of folk receiving a hefty, unexpected bill every month. Roaming charges (or lack thereof) will be clearly laid out, much like Three’s approach – so it’s no surprise to hear that ID will piggy-back on Three’s infrastructure.

Off the bat iD will give users free roaming in 22 countries, including the US and Australia, surpassing Three’s current total of 18. That alone should make it a solid choice for backpackers and gap-year bums, as well as business users on a budget.

The company has also confirmed that its standard contract length will be 12 months, rather than the current average of 24.

Graham Stapleton, CEO of Carphone Warehouse, said: “People want greater flexibility from their plans and are fed up with the ‘one size fits all’ approach.”

“We are also a generation obsessed with the mobile internet and accessing data and services on the move – things people are either paying too much for or just aren’t getting. Addressing these challenges forms the basis of the first wave of plans from iD.”

The first offerings from iD, which will include a deal for the Samsung A3 on a 12 month plan with 300 minutes, 5000 texts and 1GB of 4G data for just £19.50 a month, will go live in May. Customers will be able to sign up in any Carphone Warehouse or Currys and PC World store, as well as online.
