EE will begin trialling its 300Mbit/s LTE service in December

EE customers are currently separated by two tiers: those who can burst up to 30Mbit/s, and those who can reach a potential 150Mbit/s. That gap will become even wider with the roll out of 300Mbit/s speeds, which EE will soon begin testing.

The network will be partnering with Huawei to roll out 300Mbit/s speeds in Tech City, a small area towards East London that houses technology companies and jobs across the spectrum. The trial will be fairly limited in scope, and you won’t be able to get those speeds directly on your phone. Instead, EE will roll out mobile hotspots across the area which will serve up LTE Advanced access.

EE’s trial is due to start in December, and will only be available in Tech City. A wider roll across London is currently planned for 2014. When it does become wildely available, though, you’ll need a new phone.

Currently LTE Advanced phones – such as the Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 – currently support Category 4, enabling speeds up to 150Mbit/s. EE’s 300Mbit/s service falls under Category 6, but there currently aren’t any shipping devices that can tap into that kind of bandwidth. Still, at least you’ll be able to take advantage of EE’s speedy network straight away when Cat 6 devices start hitting the market next year.
