Epicurious recipe app for Android: Food for hungry robots

Last Friday we did a round up of food apps which included the rather tasty Epicurious app. Until recently the sole preserve of the iPhone app store, Epicurious has just set up its stall in a corner of the Android Market.

The Epicurious recipe app gives you access to 28,000 different recipies on your Android phone.

You can search for recipes by typing in search terms (i.e. Greek Salad) at the bottom of the screen, or if you’re not really sure what you want to have for dinner you can perform a general search by entering the main ingredient of the meal (chicken, avocado, cheese) or the cuisine (Cajun, Thai, French).

You can also calibrate searches based on dietary requirements (Wheat/Gluten Free, Low Carb) or preferences (Vegan/Vegetarian, Kosher) – so there’s something for everyone.

Depressingly, when we searched for a healthy lunch under the terms ‘Lunch’, ‘Healthy’ and ‘English/Scottish’ there were no results.

The app also comes with a shopping list feature, so once you’ve seen something that you like the look of, you simply tap the plus symbol in the top left of the image on the recipie page to add it to the app’s shopping list.

The list displays all the ingredients in a checklist style, so you can tick the ingredients off as you pick them off of the shelves. Meals are rated by users using a unique system of forks in lieu of stars which is a nice touch.

While the app fulfils its function of finding recipies to match your eating habits, we found that sometimes pictures of the recipes didn’t always display, or would dissapear after you’d added said recipie to your favourites list. Hopefully this little glitch will be ironed out in a future update.

Epicurious is available from the Android Market and works on Android phones running 2.0 and above.
