We check out a glasses-free 3D screen protector from EyeFly, which adds glasses-free 3D effects to movies and photos.
If you’ve ever looked at your iPhone and thought, ‘I love you, li’l buddy, but I bloody wish you could do 3D’, then good news! The EyeFly 3D can add a 3D effect to videos and photos, without the need to don ungainly 80s-style facewear.
It’s an intriguing concept: a simple screen film that adds 3D effects to your Apple device, for just a few pounds. No extra battery drain, no expensive add-ons. In reality, it comes with its fair share of issues, although there’s no denying that it works.
The EyeFly 3D comes with the screen film, plus a cleaning cloth to remove dirt from your display before you lay it down. An EyeFly app which you can download for free from the App Store helps you to get it aligned properly, and as usual with these screen protectors, you just have to pray that no dirt infiltrates between peeling off the protective layer and smoothing that bad boy down over your iPhone or iPad’s screen. We personally counted three specks of ninja grit which managed to somehow leap onto the sticky surface in the 1.3 seconds of air time. Kudos to them.
The EyeFly 3D is generally not too intrusive when you’re using your iPhone normally, although if you look close you’ll easily notice the jaggedy effect. It’s kind of unsettling on the eye, and we’d not really like to put up with it full time just for the occasional spot of 3D-ish action.
We tried playing a few YouTube videos through EyeFly’s video app and some videos worked better than others, with a clear 3D effect, while a fair few merely looked a little ‘lumpy’. We spent a significant portion of several videos adjusting the focal point meter to stop everything appearing blurry, which seems like a little too much effort for a simple 3D pay-off.
The EyeFly 3D definitely works, but we have to question whether it’s really worth it. It’d probably entertain a youngster for a while, but even then, they’d probably be unable to keep the iPhone or iPad still for long enough to sustain the 3D effect.
On the other hand, it’s only £17.99 from online retailer IWOOT, so worth a punt if you’re even vaguely intrigued.
