Facebook is hoping that its Home launcher will take over smartphones across the globe, but the download numbers so far seem to be relatively modest. Google Play lists Home as having surpassed the 500,000 download mark in the past day or so. That’s not bad considering the app is restricted to a limited number of devices, but how many people are really using it given the deluge of poor reviews?
Right now, Facebook Home has an average score of 2.2 out of 5 on the Play Store, with around 11,200 people opting to rate the launcher as of time of writing. Most people seem to dislike the fact that Home takes complete control of the phone’s homescreen, while others believe that the app is too limited in its functionality.
As for that 500,000 download number? It doesn’t necessarily mean there are 500,000 active installs. Android Central deftly points out that the 500,000 number simply means that the app has been installed that many times. Users could never have used the app, or uninstalled it straight away, so the number of active users is most likely much lower than the total number of downloads.
Still, it’s hard not to be swayed by the appeal of Home if you’re an avid Facebook user. Having instant access to your updates and feeds is great if you’re serious about social networking, and Chat Heads is a nice little addition for real time chatting and texting across Android.
