Super-secure Fieldbook phone packs strong specs and security features

The Fieldbook Secure smartphone looks to be a solid solution for anyone concerned about security, packing loads of tools to keep your data safe and your messages private.

Mobile security has been a massive issue in the past few years – unsurprising, as stories about snooping coppers stealing our data and evil fake public WiFi networks emerge pretty much every week. We’ve already played with the super-secure Blackphone, which aims to keep you safe and your data secure as you get on with your life. Now Blackphone has a rival, in the form of the Fieldbook Secure.

Fieldbook Secure: Security credentials

The Fieldbook Secure features the Cryptosmart-Mobile suite, which is an all-encompassing security solution designed for phones. It can help to wipe lost or stolen devices remotely, as well as prevent eavesdropping and other forms of data pilfering when you’re using your handset.

Your calls, data and messages are secured both on the phone itself and during transmission courtesy of built-in encryption, over Wi-Fi and all major networks. If your encrypted messages are routed through the separately-sold Cryptosmart-Gateway applicance then other trusted users can read them no problem, so your entire organisation doesn’t have to carry Fieldbook Secure handsets – although creator Logic Instrument promises that the Fieldbook is a ‘cost-effective solution’.

As well as securing your privates, the Fieldbook Secure is a bit of a tough nut, surviving drops of around one metre without issue. Full IP68 certification means the phone can also endure dust storms and unexpected plunges into water. However, all that protection takes its toll – the Fieldbook Secure is 12.5mm thick and weighs a meaty 270g, making it one of the heaviest mobiles we’ve encountered for a while.

Fieldbook Secure: Specs

Android Lollipop 5.0 should be nice and nippy thanks to the handset’s 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek processor, backed up by 2GB of RAM. 4G LTE support means web browsing and media streaming should also be suitably quick.

The Fieldbook Secure also packs a sizeable 6-inch screen with Full HD 1080p resolution, making it a solid choice for working on the move, as well as kicking back with a cheeky episode of True Detective when you’re off the clock. And with a microSD slot supporting memory cards of up to 2TB (when they finally become available), you’ll have plenty of room for your media.

You also get a 13-megapixel camera to shoot your surroundings, and at least with that added security you don’t need to worry about people spying on your more sensitive snaps. There’s a 2-megapixel selfie cam around the front.

It’s also dual-SIM, so you can use it for both business and your personal handset.

Fieldbook Secure: UK price and release date

So far there’s no word on a UK price or release date, but we’re chasing up.
