GPS giant Garmin is the latest company to launch a turn-by-turn navigation app for iPhone, although at the time of writing Garmin StreetPilot is only available in the US App Store.
The app promises similar features to those on the company’s standalone nuvi range of satnav devices. That means voice-promoted turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates, speed limits, local search, and millions of points of interest.
The app lets you play music from your iPod library without switching out, and supports iOS 4 multi-tasking so you can take calls without getting in a directionless flap.
One thing to be aware of: the app loads map data directly from Garmin’s servers, meaning a small initial download (7.5MB), but presumably data charges while you’re out and about. Garmin says that the app will also work on iPad, although in blown-up compatibility mode, rather than as a properly Universal app.
Another interesting point is the price: $39.99 in the States, which would translate to £23.99 over here when a UK-localised version is released. That compares to £39.99 for TomTom UK & Ireland, £26.99 for AA SatNav UK & Ireland, and £19.99 for CoPilot Live UK & Ireland or Navmii GPS UK & Ireland.
