A confusing as it may sound, Google have just launched their own Calendar app on Google Play for users to download, free of charge.
Now, for the majority of Android users, this is a redundant offer, why would you need the ability to download an application that comes natively on almost every Android device out there? Well, it’s the ‘almost’ that has warranted the addition of this daily utility app to Google’s mobile app marketplace.
Although many manufacturers bundle the native Calendar app or at least a seemingly identical own-brand version of the app with their Android-based smartphones and tablets, some manufacturers like to tweak, change and add functionality that they can only do with proprietary applications. CoolSmartphone use Samsung’s S Planner as their example, which both interfaces with Google’s calendar servers whilst offering a completely reworked aesthetic, notable UI tweaks and a number of additional features. What’s more the app has a broader selection of widgets with which to pin on homescreens.
Despite the ‘enhanced’ nature of apps like S Planner, many users don’t necessarily agree with these alternative apps and just as when purchasing a Nexus device for a pure Android experience, some users want apps that approach a task in much the same fashion. Those with a penchant for rooting will also appreciate the addition of such an app when creating their own Google-made app library.
The app itself is of course free and you can pick it up here from Google Play provided you’re running Android 4.0.3 or newer.
