Google has collected data on the number of devices using various versions of its Android operating system. Currently Android 2.2 retains the biggest share of all versions of the OS at a 61.3 per cent.
In fact only a few devices use anything less recent that Android 2.1, with 7.8 per cent using either 1.5 or 1.6
The newly released tablet-centric Android 3.0 or Honeycomb, currently only publicly available on the Motorola XOOM in the US, makes up only 0.2 per cent.
Google collected the data to help show developers which versions of Android were most compatible with applications. Developing for earlier iterations like 1.5 will allow applications to run on every version of Android whereas writing an app for 2.3.3 will give you access to a smaller number of users.
The dataset was created in the first two weeks of March 2011. Click here to see more Android stats.
