Google Hangouts now supports SMS and animated GIFs

Google is giving Hangouts some much needed love. The company announced today that the latest version of its messaging solution will now include SMS support. That’s pretty handy considering one of KitKat’s rumoured features is the ability to change the default SMS app in Android.

Anyone using Hangouts can also now share animated GIFs to other users (!), and there’s a new Place button too. That will pull down your GPS location and quickly share it to whichever contact you’re talking with.

Google says that HD video calls will be available to all users now as well, and it’s extending the Auto Awesome feature used on photos to videos. All of the new features are rolling out today.
