Google Nexus 4 boosts LG’s smartphone sales as Samsung takes top spot

The success of the Google Nexus 4 has seen LG’s smartphone market share rising dramatically according to the latest research by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech

In the three months prior to February 2013, LG’s share of the smartphone market increased from 4 per cent to 4.3 per cent.

LG is a long way behind South Korean rival Samsung, which takes first spot with a staggering 36.2 per cent market share, due to the huge success of the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini and Samsung Galaxy Note.

Apple claims second place with smartphone market share of 29 per cent and it’s good news for HTC’s which takes third spot rising to 9 per cent.  Nokia’s market share has risen to 5.6 per cent, driven by new Windows Phone 8 releases like the Nokia Lumia 920.

The launch of the BlackBerry Z10 hasn’t given BlackBerry a sales turn aroud. Dominic Sunnebo from Kantar states: “Over the past few years it has been BlackBerry’s budget devices, like the Curve 8520 and 9320, which have been selling well and these attract a young, price sensitive consumer.  The Z10 is a high-end handset with a price to match, so going after its existing base of consumers will require a significant trade up.

The handset is likely to start selling in more serious numbers once the launch price falls, and BlackBerry 10 in general, when the range is padded out with a number of wallet-friendly mid-range offerings.”

Operating system market share

Android remains the dominant smartphone operating system in the UK 58.3 per cent of the market – an increase from 48.3 per cent from 2012. iOS has seen a slight rise from 28.9 to 29 per cent and Windows Phone has overtaken BlackBerry (formally RIM) to take third place with 6.7 percent of the smartphone market, from 3 per cent last year.

BlackBerry’s market share saw the biggest drop from 16.8 per cent to 5.1 per cent, although its latest smartphone the BlackBerry Z10 only launch in February 2012.
