Google pulling Blackberry Gmail app

Google has announced it will stop support for its native Gmail app for Blackberry by the end of November,

A notice on the Google support pages states that: we will end support for the Gmail App for Blackberry (installed native app). Over this past year, we’ve focused efforts on building a great Gmail experience in the mobile browser and will continue investing in this area.

It goes on to say that the download link is being removed, but Blackberry users can continue to access Gmail via the mobile web app.

Blackberry owners who have already downloaded it will still be able to use it, but it will be unsupported, which means there won’t be access for future updates. Support for Google Apps Connector for Blackberry Enterprise Server continues, so you’ll still be able to access Google mail via your Blackberry Inbox

It could be that the two events are unrelated, but just last week Google released its first dedicated app for Gmail, only to pull it later following ‘a bug with notifications. ’  Is Google trying to entice people to use Gmail via the browser? Or could this be a move from Google to grab custom from Blackberry to Android?

If you’re a Blackberry user you’ve got until November 22nd to download the app.
