HP ditches webOS: No more TouchPad tablets or Pre phones

Tech sites murmured earlier today that HP was set for a big announcement tonight, possibly “spinning off” its PC section.

But it’s an even bigger bombshell; they’re doing the same to webOS and its related devices.

It’s been just over six months since tech giant HP showed of the likes of the TouchPad and Palm 3, running its latest version of webOS – one designed specifically for multitasking.

The company’s exact words were that it “will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones.”

There were signs; the most obvious being the whimpered Pre 3 launch yesterday, with no reviews yet written about HP’s great mobile hope. The tiny Veer also had less than favourable comments, while the HP TouchPad received mixed reviews.

More news about this when we get it. It could mean cut-price tablets and smartphones for many not bothered about a growing operating system – and webOS is still a pretty nice system as it stands.
