Your options for a convertible Android device have been limited so far, with only the expensive Asus Transformer Pad Infinity really filling that particular niche. HP has decided to try its hand at the same kind of product in the form of the HP SlateBook x2. It’s a surprisingly appealing tablet too, and one of the first devices to use Nvidia’s new Tegra 4 processor.
Spec wise the SlateBook x2 features a Tegra 4 chip, along with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 10.2-inch 1920×1200 IPS display. There’s also a microSD card slot for additional storage, but the key feature is the removable keyboard dock. Just like the Transformer Infinity, the dock will boost the battery life of the tablet and give you a nearly full-size keyboard for text input.
The keyboard dock also comes with a USB port, SD card slot, and a HDMI output. HP says that the keyboard dock should “double” the battery life of the tablet, making it an interesting choice for anyone on a long-haul flight or for those who simply need a keyboard to get some work done.
The SlateBook x2 is running Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2, and better yet, it’s almost stock. HP has included a few applications of its own, though, including a file manager and text editor. The company says that the tablet will run $480 (around £315), but unlike Asus’ convertible tablet, the keyboard dock is included in that price. There’s no exact release date just yet, but HP says it should launch sometime in August.
