HTC discussing plans for its own mobile OS?

HTC is apparently discussing internally whether to buy its own mobile operating system, according the company’s chairwoman, Cher Wang. Talking to Taiwan’s Central news agaency, she said, “We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse.”

“We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS.”

There’s been speculation that a phone hardware manufacturer may be interested in buying the licences for HP’s webOS, after the US company announced that the HP Pre 3 would be their last mobile device.

Samsung has already unequivocally denied any plans to adopt webOS, this is the first statement that HTC has said regarding a new mobile platform.

HTC already produce smartphone for both Android and Windows Phone 7, and this would create a third platform, perhaps stretching the company’s know-how. At the same time, the HTC CEO was quizzed about Android maker Google’s buy-out of phone-maker rival Motorola; she answered that it was the correct decision, as Motorola held plenty of useful patents.
