HTC One S won’t receive Android 4.2 update

HTC launched two tantalizing phones last year, the HTC One X and HTC One S. And while it’s only been 15 months since the handset launched, HTC has confirmed that the One S won’t be receiving an update to Android 4.2. HTC didn’t give an explicit reason why either, making the news all the more frustrating.

In a statement posted by Android Central, the company details how the One S “will remain on the current version of Android and HTC Sense.” HTC goes on to say that “customers should feel confident that we have designed the HTC One S to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences.” That’s really not much consolation for a handset with plenty of horsepower, though.

At least the One S saw an update from Android 4.0 to Android 4.1. Anyone who owns the handset wanting to make the jump to Android 4.2, though, will have to root their device and install a custom ROM. It’s not an ideal solution, but it’s the only one available now that HTC has given up on the phone. The company did say, however, that the HTC One X will continue to see software updates in the future.
