HTC Runnymede: Beats By Dr. Dre, a 4.7-inch screen and a Thames-centric name? Straight outta Surrey

HTC’s big old bash in London is just a day away. We’re expecting good times, phones galore and the official announcement of some, if not all, of the 6 to 8 HTC phones mentioned by Peter Chou earlier this year.

The HTC Runnymede may or may not be among this elite mystery group. Chances are that the Surrey-centric name of the phone (if genuine) is an in-house working title and will probably be dropped in favour of something more universal (HTC Magna Carta perhaps?).

Anyway, what’s really interesting is the list of rumoured spec, unearthed by Pocketnow. The Runnymede runs Android 2.3.4. Gingerbread, sports a mighty 4.7-inch WVGA (480×800) touchscreen and has the same 1.5GHz Qualcomm CPU as the Flyer (MSM8255).

4.7-inches. It was around September last year when the Desire HD was announced, with it’s 4.3-incher which we through was pushing the acceptable limit. The phone is said to be ‘less than 10 millimetres thick’ (so, 9.9mm right?). So if the phone is super-wide because of a big screen, it sounds like it won’t be too brickish.

Then again the rumoured HTC Eternity, running Windows Phone 7, is said to come with a 4.7-inch screen. So perhaps the Runnymede is its Android counterpart.

An impressive 16GB of internal storage has been bunged in which is good news. HTC’s Android smartphones have been slim on internal storage in the past. We imagine that there’ll be a microSD slot as well, but the source makes no mention of this.

The main camera weighs in at 8-megapixels, records 720p video and has an aperture of f/2.2, same as on the Evo 3D. There’s two flashes and a 1.3-megapixel front facing cam as well.

Sense 3.5, which we saw yesterday on the so-called HTC Bliss, is also said to be present. Finally the Runnymede is though to be fruit of HTC’s partnership with Beats Audio, the chaps who make the Beats by Dre headphones.

As well as boasting SRS Surround sound it would make sense for HTC to be pitching the Runnymede as a music phone; that 16GB of storage would give ample room for any Mr. B the Gentleman Rhymer playlists.

HTC wouldn’t spill any of the hypothetical beans when we spoke to them; why ruin any surprises the day before your big party? We’re going to be there so if the Runnymede makes an appearance we’ll be sure to let you know.
