Google and Asus still haven’t refreshed the Nexus 7 with that rumoured 7-inch 1080p display, but at least Huawei is making an effort to bring a high-resolution 7-inch tablet to market. The Chinese manufacturer has today announced the MediaPad 7 Youth, a 7-inch tablet with a 1080p display and dual-core processor clocked at 1.6Ghz.
Huawei didn’t say exactly which processor is powering the tablet, but it’s good to see higher resolution displays starting to make an appearance in smaller tablets. Other details of the MediaPad 7 Youth include a large 4,100mAh battery and an aluminium unibody chassis, measuring 9.9mm thick and weighing around 350 grams.
And just like the recently released Asus FonePad, the MediaPad 7 Youth is capable of making and receiving phone calls. Huawei says that the tablet includes a HSPA+ modem capable of speeds up to 21Mbit/s, with owners able to send and receive text messages as well as phone calls from the device. It may sound silly to carry around a 7-inch device as your daily driver, but it’s really not all that unusual in Eastern markets.
Huawei says that the MediaPad 7 Youth will be released in Europe, Russia, China, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region in the third quarter. There’s no word on pricing or firmer availability, but we’ll let you know when we find out more.
