Huawei has confirmed it’ll launch its next big flagship phone, the Ascend P8, at a London event on April 15th. That’s despite – or perhaps because of – most huge phone launches taking place at MWC in March.
Huawei confirmed the launch date for the Ascend P8 to press during a media event in Shanghai, though it stopped short of dropping any spoilers on what people can expect from the device, preferring instead to let the specs and design remain a mystery.
Of course, the internet rumour mill has been churning as always, and the Ascend P8 is expected to feature some significant upgrades over its predecessor, the Ascend P7 (pictured). Web whisperings suggest it will come packing a 5.2-inch 1080p display, featuring curved 2.5D glass like Apple’s iPhone 6.
Design seems to be a focus for Huawei, so the Ascend P8 could also sport a metal chassis and a porcelain rear panel, similar to the sort used in HTC’s One S.
Internally, the new flagship may run on HiSilicon’s Kirin 920 SoC, which utilises ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, with 4 Cortex-A7 cores running alongside 4 Cortex-A15’s. The Ascend P8 is also expected to feature LTE and expandable storage, as well as 3GB RAM and an improved camera rocking a 13-megapixel sensor.
People were expecting to clap eyes on the Ascend P8 at Mobile World Congress 2015, with Huawei’s press conference scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday 1st. However, Huawei is expected to use the event to showcase its new wearables instead, including the company’s premier smartwatch, while saving its flagship announcement for another time. Considering that MWC is expected to herald the launch of the HTC One M9, Samsung Galaxy S6 and new Sony kit too, perhaps this is a shrewd decision from Huawei.
