India launches world’s cheapest tablet, costs $60

India has produced the world’s cheapest touchscreen tablet, according to Reuters. The Aakash tablet, designed primarily for the classroom, will be available to students at a subsidised cost of $35 and later go on sale to the general public for $60.

According to Indian Telecomms and Education Minister Kapil Sibal, the tablet is critical in getting India’s poorer rural areas online and into the technological era. “The rich have access to the digital world, the poor and ordinary have been excluded.” He said. “Aakash will end that digital divide.”

Running Android 2.2 FroYo, the Aakash tablet rocks a 7-inch resistative touchscreen (that’s the non-multi-touch kind), a 366MHz processor, two USB ports and a reported three-hour battery life.

The Aakash is the second government subsidised tablet we’ve seen launched this week, with Russian firm Rusnano also announcing a Kindle-esque tablet for the country’s university students, albeit using an e-ink screen rather than a true tablet touch display.
