iOS 8.1.1 update arrives, awesome for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners

Good news for owners of ageing iPhones and iPads, as Apple finally releases iOS 8.1.1 to address performance issues affecting the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

It’s fair to say that the launch of iOS 8 wasn’t without its hiccups. The new iteration of Apple’s stunningly successful mobile OS brought with it plenty of new features, but also caused plenty of problems for owners of older devices such as the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Apple promised a performance fix with iOS 8.1.1 and now the update is here, great news for owners of older Apple kit.

Users of Apple’s iPhone 4S and iPad 2 were hit particularly hard by iOS 8. There were complaints of devices slowing down and becoming almost unusable, and while it’s easy to write such devices off as obsolete, the compulsory nature of Apple’s updates means that everyone should be taken care of, not just those with cutting edge hardware like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

iOS 8.1.1 brings the inclusivity which should have been present from the get-go though, fixing the commonly reported bugs and bringing older hardware back to life. According to the changelog, the update packs bug-fixes and increased stability, which is always welcome when your whole life’s stored on your smartphone.

If you aren’t an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 user, you won’t find much to celebrate in the update – save for the knowledge that Apple doesn’t forget its users, which is quite an endearing feature in the fast moving smartphone market.

So far there have been no reports of issues with this update, unlike earlier ‘upgrades’ which nixed cellular connectivity or caused all manner of unwanted side-effects. We’re testing on a couple of Apple devices and if we notice any funnies, you’ll be the first to know. For now, if you’re an Apple user, you can grab iOS 8.1.1 by heading to the Settings > General > Software Update.
