The biggest rumour surrounding Apple’s soon-to-be-released iPhone 5 is that it’ll make the jump away from the 3.5-inch screen size of old and opt for a 16:9 4-inch display instead. It seems that provided sources close to MyDrivers.com are correct, this decision has involved a lot of thought on Apple’s part, as the components set to make use of a different technology, never before used on an iPhone.
Word from Apple’s supply chain suggest that the new 4-inch Retina display will not only adopt a 16:9 aspect ratio, maintaining the current iPhone body’s width and extending its height, but will also utilise an in-cell touch layer. The process involves combining the LCD and touch layer into a single component and doing so reduces part thickness and by proxy, overall thickness of the device in one fell swoop.
With the overall proportions of the iPhone 5 expected to be similar to that of the current iPhone 4S, aside from the added height, Apple must be trying to slim down other parts in order to allow more room for its new internals. Excluding the new screen rumours collated over time suggest the new iPhone 5 will also use a dual-core CPU with a quad-core GPU, much like the current-gen iPad.
There’s also talk of a metal backplate helping create a unibody design and a new dock connector, shunning the traditional 30-pin Apple dock that’s graced every iPhone thus far to save space and accommodate the headphone jack which has supposedly shift from the top to the bottom of the device.
