Apple iPhone 6: Everything we know so far

The full skinny on Apple’s iPhone 6: news, rumours, leaks, photos and all kinds of stuff that may or may not be total codswallop.

It’s no great shock that Apple’s iPhone 6 is one of the most-searched mobiles on t’interwebs, despite the predicted launch being a couple of months away. Everyone’s eager to see what Apple comes up with next, after the slick fingerprint scanner and slow-mo video mode of the iPhone 5s, not to mention its candy-coloured iPhone 5c, a real departure for the Californian company.

The iPhone 6 in a nutshell

Apple’s iPhone 6 is expected to launch in September 2014, and is already in production.

It will come packing iOS 8, which has a strong focus on health (much like Samsung’s latest TouchWiz).

It will apparently be bigger than ever before, with a 4.7-inch model strongly hinted at, and possibly an even larger 5.5-inch version for those with gigantic hands. The 5.5-inch model may be launched under a different name, and is currently being referred to as the ‘iPhone phablet’ or ‘iPhablet’.

Rumours and leaked pics also reveal an all-new design, with curved finish edges replacing the iconic flat sides. The iPhone 6 will also be the slimmest Apple handset yet, despite the bigger screen.

The iPhone 6’s screen won’t be made of pure sapphire, but a cheaper hybrid material.

The full iPhone 6 skinny

We’ve now got mockup iPhone 6 photos based on the alleged official blueprints, which have been leaked from sources in the supply line. They show exactly what rumours have pointed to for so long – a 4.7-inch model rocking a more curved look, with the flat edges rounding off.

Considering even the ‘Mini’ and ‘Compact’ versions of flagship smartphones are now hovering dangerously close to 5-inches (we’re looking at you, LG G2 Mini), we certainly would’ve been shocked if Apple decided to keep its next iPhone so small.

The 4.7-inch screen will not be made of pure sapphire as previously rumoured, which would be expensive but make it practically scratch-proof. Instead, the screen is likely made of a hybrid material, which is still tough enough to resist scratches while also remaining flexible. However, it’s unsurprisingly vulnearble to attacks by bow-wielding comedians.

Apple iPhone 6 news and rumours and UK specs so far

Despite that bigger screen, the iPhone 6 will be the slimmest phone Apple has launched. That’s thanks in part to the uber-thin display, as well as the slender new battery design.

The Apple logo on the back of the phone might also glow when you receive a notification.

It’s basically a given that the iPhone 6 will sport iOS 8, but the new features are the most interesting factor. We’ve heard rumours of iris scanners, something Alcatel launched at MWC 2014 in a tablet, although the iPhone 5s’ fingerprint scanner was a great tool that worked really well. There’s also been the usual talk of bendy screens and other much-hyped tech, but those rumours smell a bit funny to us.

Expect to see the iPhone 6 launch in September officially, with handsets already churning off the production lines.

Don’t forget integration with the iWatch as well, a gadget that Apple still hasn’t launched, but should emerge in 2014. If rumours are right, the iWatch could even save your life.
