Jane Austen meets slavering zombies in new iPhone game

Jane Austen’s novels might be finely-nuanced satires of the social dynamics of late 18th and early 19th century British society, but they could do with a few more characters munching on one another’s brains, don’t you think? We’ve always said it, although sadly our A-Level English examination essay marker didn’t agree…

Thankfully, iPhone games firm Freeverse does. It’s just released a game with the self-explanatory title Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, based on the book of the same name. It’s a side-scrolling beat ’em up that sees you playing a typical Austen heroine. Well, typical until she starts slashing hordes of the undead into bloody chunks, anyway.

It might sound like a novelty, but the game sports high production values, online leaderboards, and tippy accelerometer controls to cause maximum carnage. We’re hoping this sort of thing becomes a trend: what price an iPhone game that mashes up Oliver Twist with Saw 3?
