Leaked images show the metal-bodied Samsung Galaxy Alpha up close

Rumours have called it many names, but now we have some clear photos showing the first metal-bodied Samsung Galaxy smartphone in the flesh metal.

For all the clout Samsung holds in the mobile market, there are still plenty of users sporting rival smartphones for one very simple reason – Samsung phones are plastic.

Handsets like the iPhone 5S and HTC One (M8) have been praised time and again for their stunning metal and glass bodywork, all the while their most significant Korean rival has continued to churn out plastic handsets from its budget, right up to its flagship smartphone offerings. With the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, that looks like it’s going to change.

Rumours of a premium metal Samsung handset have been floating around for months and eventually the name ‘Alpha’ was thrown into the mix as well. Whilst specs have fluctuated from one piece of hearsay to the next, the consistent element to everybody’s stories is that the Samsung Galaxy Alpha will finally sport a metal body.

Samsung’s yet to play its hand on whether these claims are true, however Chinese Twitter alternative, Weibo has produced some rather convincing mockups of a handset that many are saying is the Alpha, complete with precision chamfered metal edging.

Decide for yourself on the legitimacy of the handset in these snaps, but Weibo user DaarrthVader, whose hand is presumably in these shots, is clearly sporting a working device that has Samsung DNA written all over it.

The Alpha is also said to rock a faster, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core chip or Samsung’s own Exynos Octa-core chipset depending on market, not to mention LTE-A, built specifically for its super-fast homeland of South Korea.

Manufacturing issues have also alluded to the fact that us Europeans may never see the Alpha make it to store shelves due to low component numbers as a result of slow production yield of the metal casing from new producers Samsung is using, based in China.

Whether or not these pictures give us real proof of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha remains to be seen, however it’s the closest we’ve come to getting our hands on a true metal-bodied Samsung Galaxy handset, and we like what we see.

The Galaxy Alpha is rumoured to be making an official appearance at IFA 2014, taking place in Berlin, Germany next month. DaarrthVader in a separate post on their feed, stated that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which is expected to be launch alongside the Alpha at IFA, will rock an impressive 6.7-inch display too.
