Displays with a 1080p resolution seem to be the standard on Android flagships these days, but what will devices of the future be using? LG has the answer for us. The display manufacturer has shown off a 5.5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 2560×1440, making it the highest resolution mobile display yet.
The pixel density for the panel works out to around 538 PPI. To give you a little bit of context, the screen on the HTC One is 469 PPI, while the display on the iPhone 5 is 326 PPI. LG’s new high-res screen sounds absurd, then, given that currently available displays already look incredibly sharp, but the advance in technology brings other benefits.
LG says that the bezel surrounding the display is only 1.2mm, and this new panel is even thinner than the 5.2-inch 1080p screen that the company is using in the G2. That 5.2-inch screen is 2.2mm thick, while the new 1440p display is just 1.21mm thick. The use of a LTPS (low temperature poly-silicon) substrate means that the panel shouldn’t have any trouble overcoming glare from the sun either, with LG saying that it should reach 430 nits of brightness.
The company didn’t say when we can expect to see this panel ship in devices, but we’ll hazard a guess and say that you won’t see this before next year at the very earliest.
