LG and Dolby Mobile: Android now in surround sound

LG has been working with Dolby (cinematic sound experts) since July 2008 to improve sound quality on its handsets and we’re quite excited to see that they’re now showing Android handsets with 5.1 multi-channel surround sound. This nifty addition should give you cinema-like audio when you watch films and TV shows on your handset – so you’ll hear sounds moving around you as well as a richer and more vibrant audio track. At least that’s the theory – we’ll let you know when we’ve had a go ourselves.

“Together with Dolby, we hope to raise the bar for audio quality in mobile devices and the mobile industry as a whole,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. Admirable, and we’re all for improved handset audio quality – but we’d also like to see the end of proprietary headphone jacks on all LG handsets so we can complement that with our own headphones.
