LG Optimus 4X HD confirmed: Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core, 4.7-inch screen

LG’s taken the wraps off of the LG Optimus 4X HD which sounds like a real powerhouse; there’s Nvidia’s Tegra 3 quad-core chip (clocked to 1.5GHz), a 4.7-inch screen with ‘True HD IPS’ technology and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

As the LG Optimus 3D Cube announced yesterday was something of a follow up to last year’s LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus 4X HD looks to be a spiritual successor to last year’s LG Optimus 2X (aka LG Star) that was the first dual-core Android phone to be announced.

Measuring a sprightly 8.9mm thick, LG is again claiming first place in the quad-core race. The
single companion core of Nvidia’s Tegra 3 will provide “minimal power alone [for] calls, emails, to handle simple tasks, such as music playback,” while the rest of the hardware will come online to handle high end “games, HD video playback, multi-tasking [and] high-performance work,” while promising “high battery efficiency. Weighted companion core

1GB of RAM and a 2150 mAh battery keep supplies the task managing muscle and juice while storage-wise you’ve got 16GB of internal memory for storage.

There’s two cameras – an 8-megapixel main unit (autofocus and LED flash) and a 1.3-megapixel front-facer – and the specs are rounded out by a micro USB connection with MHL for wired video streaming and DLNA for wireless media playback.

There’s no mention so far of any of the finer points such as weight or the rest of the dimensions, nor anything about a microSD card slot.

Release wise however, we can expect to see the LG Optimus 4X HD hittig markets worldwide, “starting with Europe in the second quarter.” Finally, some Euros-first love from LG. Verizon punters have got the LG Spectrum, us tea-sipping Limeys will get the LG Optimus 4X HD.

Heading to the stands at Mobile World Congress, expect pictures and hands-on video of the LG Optimus 4X HD in a matter of days.
