LG Optimus G: ‘Enhanced’ Android smartphone gets European launch

LG has confirmed it’s flagship smartphone the LG Optimus G will be launching in Europe later this month, with a quad-core processor, 4G and some new enhancements.

The LG Optimus G was released in South Korea in late 2012 running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the European version includes Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.  The 4.7-inch 1280×768 HD screen incorporates Gorilla Glass and debuts LG’s Zerogap Touch technology, creating a sharp, vivid display and smooth touch experience.

“Since the successful initial launch of Optimus G, LG has continued to improve the smartphone to offer better usability and value for our customers,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We’re excited to be bringing to Europe the improved Optimus G, our most powerful Quad-Core device optimized for 4G LTE networks.”

New and upgraded features are demonstrated in the video below. Q Slide lets you use multiple apps simultaneously, they appear as layers, you can move around, Safety Care automatically sends location information to a key contact in the event of emergency and Privacy Keeper enables incoming call information to be hidden.

The LG Optimus G is set to launch in Sweden later this month, before heading to France, Germany and Italy, LG UK could not yet confirm whether the phone will be coming here.

What does the LG Optimus G look like?

One of LG’s chief designers, Sera Park explained that the focus of the Optimus G was to reflect the company’s design past in its future products. “Our top priority was to carry over LG’s unique design DNA and heritage to Optimus G. It has many of the elements that we incorporated in the past in phones such as Chocolate, Prada and L-Series. For example, the front face of Optimus G is completely black with lines that are nearly invisible when the phone is off, an effect similar to the original LG Prada.

The phone’s back features a Crystal Reflection process which the company say took 15 months to develop. The patterning is designed to show off different geometric patterns on the phone’s back relative to the light and the angle it’s held at. It’s then rounded off with laser cutting accents and highlights.
