LG announces ‘world’s slimmest’ 5.2-inch 1080p display

Display manufacturers are constantly pushing the boundaries on what they can cram into a smartphone, with LG the latest company to announce its new wares. The South Korean company has unveiled what it calls “the world’s slimmest Full HD panel for smartphones”, measuring 5.2-inches diagonally and coming in at just 2.2mm thin.

In addition, the panel will reduce the bezel around the edge of the display, with LG saying that it measures just 2.3mm thick. The company has used all the latest tricks to make the panel as thin as possible too, saying that this particularly display is capable of reaching 535 nits of brightness – much higher than the typical 300-400 nits you’d get on most smartphone displays.

That all sounds great in theory, but when will we actually see the panel shipping in smartphones? Sooner than you might think. Recent rumours have indicated that LG’s next flagship phone – reportedly called the LG G2 – will feature a 5.2-inch 1080p display. And judging how LG just announced a 5.2-inch 1080p panel, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that it’s the same display that the company will include in its next handset.

LG is holding an event in New York City on August 7th, so we’ll find out exactly what the company has in mind then. We’ll bring you all the news from the event as it happens.
