A blog post detailing the recent release of MeeGo 1.1 to developers states that MeeGo’s “handset user experience software” should be finished by April 2011.
This date gives us a bit of a hint at Meego timescales – it’s likely that the first MeeGo handsets won’t arrive until a little later, perhaps late spring/early summer next year.
Note that this date is just for the software rather than any phone hardware, so we could be jumping to conclusions here. And let’s not forget that the Nokia N8 arrived a little later than expected so it’s entirely possible that Meego handsets are further off than we think. All the same, this little snippet gives us an idea of when we can expect the first MeeGo phones to arrive.
There’s also a new in-progress screenshot of MeeGo 1.1 in action, although the post says that it “is neither finished nor is it representative of what the experience will look like on future Nokia devices”.
That said it doesn’t look too dissimilar from the screenshots released by Team MeeGo earlier this year, so the above statement could be a sneaky diversionary tactic on Nokia’s part. We were rather taken with what we saw back in June and wouldn’t mind if the finished product ended up looking something like this.
We’ve contacted Nokia for further information on MeeGo’s ETA but have yet to hear back. We’ll let you know as soon as we do.
Update: We’ve just heard back from Nokia who declined to elaborate any further.
