The sexiest bits of the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL

Microsoft has officially launched the 5.2-inch Lumia 950 and 5.7-inch Lumia 950 XL flagship smartphones, packing Quad HD screens, Snapdragon processors and premium specs. So, what’s the best bits of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL?

Liquid cooling. On a phone.

Like the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, the new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are apparently kept from overheating by a snazzy liquid cooling system. That means it can operate at a blistering pace – even to desktop standards (see later) – without making your palm all sweaty.

Glance screen gives you all your info with zero battery wastage

We probably waste a fair bit of battery life checking to see if any exciting emails or messages have landed in our inboxes in the three and half minutes since we last checked our phones. With Microsoft’s latest Glance Screen, you can see all of your important info without bothering to unlock your mobile. Best of all, the Glance Screen uses ‘zero battery life’ – or so we’re told.

PureView 20-megapixel camera

The Lumia brand is synonymous with awesome cameras, and PureView makes a welcome return on the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. That 20-megapixel camera boasts ‘5th generation optical image stabilisation’ and full manual controls as usual, while the triple RGB flash eliminates red-eye and produces realistic colours in low light shots. And of course there’s a 4K mode for shooting super-sharp video.

Turn your phone into a PC

Microsoft’s snazzy Continuum feature means you can hook your Lumia 950 to a keyboard, mouse and monitor and turn it into a computer, complete with HDMI connectivity and three USB ports. It’s a great idea to help you stay productive on the go if you don’t want to lug a laptop about.

And thanks to the Lumia’s microSD memory card slot, you can (eventually) boast up to 2TB of storage space for your files and media.

Best possible reception

Both the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950XL pack dual antennas, so you should be able to get excellent reception wherever you roam. No more dropped phone calls hopefully (remember when we made calls on mobiles? Crazy!)

Facial recognition

While fingerprint scanners are proving very popular on modern Androids like the Xperia Z5, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL use a different method of security: iris scanning. Just glance at your phone and it should unlock, eliminating the need to awkwardly fumble or remember PIN codes (hopefully).

The Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL are coming in November 2015 to the UK although we don’t have a specific UK price for either phone yet.
