Microsoft Surface Pro 3 launches in the UK today starting at £639

Microsoft’s MacBook Air-slayer, the Surface Pro 3 hits stores across the UK starting from today.

If you’re looking for a new laptop, or a performance tablet, the Surface Pro 3 is hoping to cover both bases with its adaptable design. The latest in the company’s Surface line, the Pro 3 fixes many of the long-term shortcomings that plagued previous iterations, whilst at the same time, incorporating some impressive new tech.

To celebrate the launch, Microsoft called upon respected ballpoint pen artist James Mylne to create some unique works using their new slate-cum-laptop. One of the standout features on the Pro 3 is the Surface Pen, which when paired with the Full HD Plus display’s N-Trig digitiser, allows the user to create, write and sketch with nearly zero latency.

In an unveiling held at the National Portrait Gallery yesterday, Mylne showcased three famous portraits of Brits known for being able to wield ‘the power of the pen’ that he’d recreated using the Surface Pro 3 and Microsoft’s Fresh Paint application.

Each portrait took around 12 hours to complete and despite the change of medium, Mylne said, “it’s remarkable how quickly I was able to adapt my working style to the Surface Pro 3.” The portraits feature the Brontë Sisters, Dame Christabel Pankhurst and William Shakespeare – the original of which was the first portrait the NPG ever acquired.

Hardware-wise, the Surface Pro 3 is designed to take on devices like Apple’s MacBook Air with 4th-generation Intel i3, i5 or i7 processors at its heart, paired with ample amounts of RAM and internal SSD storage ranging from 64GB up to 512GB. In our review we commended the mid-range spec Pro 3 for its fluidity, the impressive hardware the company has squeezed into such a slim design and its beautiful screen.
