Mobile phones overtake consoles and PCs as a gaming platform

Brits are becoming mobile gaming obsessed it seems, with the latest data from a survey published by PopCap Games showing 73% of UK respondents stating they had played games on the mobile at some time in the past.

The survey was carried out by Information Solutions Group looked at mobile gaming habits of 2,425 U.S. and U.K. adults. Results showed how the mobile phone is now the most popular gaming device, overtaking PCs and games consoles in the last two years.

PopCap’s EVP of Worldwide Publishing, Dennis Ryan has said that “mobile games are, along with social games, the hottest sector of the video game industry by far,”

PopCap is famous for its ultra-addictive mobile gaming apps like Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies.

The survey also suggests that the majority of gamers are a one play only affair. Most of the respondents had simply tried mobile games, with only 33.6% of U.S. and U.K. adults playing in the last month.

The trend towards gaming on your mobile phone continues to grow, with Sony Ericsson confirming the Xperia Play at this years MWC. The dual-core smartphone lineup this year should also see the boundaries being pushed in terms of games on your handset, the extra processing power likely causing serious graphical improvements.
