Motorola has taken the wraps off of an extra-ruggedised version of it’s already tough DEFY+ phone; the Motorola DEFY+ JCB Edition.
As the tie-in suggests, the DEFY+ JCB Edition features a hardened exterior that’s design to withstand the rigours of a construction environment. To whit, it comes coated in JCB’s “patented visco-elastic protective sleeve”
Rather than simply toughen the exterior and slap some JCB branding on the back, Motorola and JCB have added a neat ToolBox set of applications. This includes a digital spirit level, a torch app (using the camera’s flash), a decibel meter and unit/measurement converters. There’s even a theodolite app on board.
Theodolites are the tripod-mounted surveying instruments that you usually see on building sites (we had to Google it). We’re not sure if this will render high-end surveying gear obsolete, but then again we’re not topographists.
We can however see the other applications coming in handy on building sites and in the home, by DIY enthusiasts. Is your dad addicted to buying stuff from ScrewFix? There’s a phone for that!
Otherwise, the specs of the DEFY+ JCB edition are the same as your regular, non-DIY DEFY+: Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 1GHz processor and a 5-megapixel camera.

The Motorola DEFY+ JCB Edition will set you back £259.99 on it’s own; we’re chasing up now for a list of retailers as well as putting feelers out for contracts/network availability.
