After being promised that an update to Android 2.2 Froyo would materialise by the end of last December, Motorola Milestone owners must be feeling more than a bit dejected, given that it’s March 2011. But deject ye no more Milestoners, for the fabled Froyo is finally arriving.
According to Motorola Europe’s Facebook page, the “Android™ 2.2 (Froyo) software upgrade for Milestone is now being rolled out in selected countries,” which includes the UK.
The link to Moto’s global site on the Facebook page doesn’t really enlighten any further as to exactly when the upgrades will start to roll out or how they’ll be delivered. There are instructions for installing updates over the air and via PC’s.
We’ve contacted Motorola for further info on this upgrade and how to install it, so stayed tuned for updates.
If you receive a update message in the notification bar of your Milestone, we recommend that you back up your pictures and music before installing anything. Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi as well before you start downloading and you’ve got a full battery.
Android 2.2 Froyo ought to see you enjoying all sorts of nice things like Wi-Fi and USB tethering, installing apps to your SD card and being able to make use of some of the higher-end Android apps available from the Market.
Update: We’ve just heard back from Motorola who’ve said that you should back up all third party data (i.e.music, pictures, ringtones, and screensavers) as these will be deleted in the update. Things like contact information and anything you’ve synced to your Google Account will of course be saved.
Regarding how to get the update, Motorola’s official responce is this: “We are offering the upgrade via MSU – Motorola Software Update – which requires the customer to connect their Milestone to a PC with a cable. However, if customers in countries where the upgrade has been released are unable to upgrade via MSU, for example if they use a Mac computer, we can support an over the air update if the customer contacts their local call centre.”
