Motorola Milestone solves Rubik’s Cube, gets 2.1 update

I never really saw the appeal of a Rubik’s Cube as a kid. Once I figured out you could simply take the coloured stickers off and replace them, I lost interest.

Some people might call it cheating, some might call it thinking outside the box, but either way I’d have no chance at beating this awesome creation in a time trial. This Lego Mindstorms robot, built by ARM, can solve a Rubik’s cube in just 24.02 seconds using a Motorola Milestone as its brain.

According to Gizmodo, where we first spotted the video below, ARM created an app specifically for the task. It uses the Milestone’s camera to take a picture of the side of the cube facing the phone, then sends commands to the robot over Bluetooth.

Today also sees the rollout of Android 2.1 to the Motorola Milestone. You can upgrade manually right now by following this link. If that’s a bit labour-intensive for you then sit tight – Motorola says that the update will be coming over the air in the next few days.
