Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Force: In a nutshell

The Moto Z is Motorola’s first big flagship phone of 2016, boasting modular clip-on accessories like the LG G5 called ‘MotoMods’. Here’s everything you need to know about the Moto Z and its sibling the Moto Z Force, including specs, UK price and release date, and how the Moto Z and Moto Z Force compare.

What are the Moto Z and Moto Z Force?

Motorola just launched its two new 2016 flagship phones, named the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. These 5.5-inch Android mobiles boast modular expandability, just like the LG G5, and will be released in the UK later this year. The Moto Z Force is the tougher of the two handsets, able to survive a drop onto a solid surface from a pretty scary distance.

Moto Z vs Moto Z Force: Specs and features

Both the Moto Z and Moto Z Force are 5.5-inch phones, just like the new Moto G mobiles, packing a Quad HD display for super-crisp visuals. You get the latest Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB of RAM for speedy performance, as well as fingerprint sensors for added security. However, from there the two handsets sport different specs and features.

The Moto Z comes with a 13-megapixel camera complete with Optical Image Stabilisation (to cut out judder when you move and shoot) and laser autofocus, for a fast shutter speed. There’s a front-facing 5-megapixel camera too, with its own LED flash for night and club shots.

The Moto Z Force boosts the Moto Z’s battery life from an estimated 30 hours to 40 hours, along with Motorola’s latest Turbo Power charging which gives you 15 hours of use from just 15 minutes of charging (or so the company claims). The camera is also improved, to a 21-megapixel lens with Phase Detection Autofocus. And of course the Moto Z Force is more hardy, able to withstand a drop onto concrete or other hard surfaces.

However, the biggest and best feature of both the Moto Z and Moto Z Force is the clip-on MotoMods accessories, which will be available from launch.

What are MotoMods and which MotoMods will launch with the Moto Z?

The MotoMods are Motorola’s clip-on modular accessories, which stick onto the back of the Moto Z and add extra features, such as a cool projector and a powerful JBL speaker. Check out our guide to MotoMods, which explains what MotoMods will be available at launch.

How does the Moto Z and Moto Z Force compare with last year’s Moto X phones?

The big new innovation for the 2016 flagship phones is Motorola’s MotoMods modular design, which apes the LG G5 and allows for quick and easy upgrading. Besides that, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force boast the latest specs including the all-new Snapdragon 820 processor and Motorola’s latest camera tech, for a better all-round experience. And like last year’s Moto X Force, the Moto Z Force can soak up plenty of punishment including a drop onto concrete.

What is the Moto Z and Moto Z Force UK price and release date?

The Moto Z and Moto Z Force will be available to buy in the UK in September 2016. So far there’s no word on a UK price for the phones, but we’ll update as soon as we know.
