It’s safe to say that the Nokia Lumia 1020 is the best cameraphone that you can buy right now, but could it possibly hope to replace a professional DSLR? One photographer for National Geographic decided to find out in coordination with Nokia. Stephen Alvarez used the phone as his primary camera while touring South West America, delivering some beautiful photos in the process.
The full set of photos taken with the Lumia 1020 is available on to view on National Geographic’s website, and there’s also a video showing the handset’s recording capabilities. Alvarez certainly seems to be impressed too: “Getting these results from a smartphone, at magazine resolution, is stunning. I’ve used a lot of smartphones, so when I set out on this assignment I had my doubts. My doubts are gone. There’s never been anything even remotely like it.”
The combination of a huge 41-megapixel sensor, optical image stabilisation, and Pro Camera software no doubt helped Alvarez to achieve such stunning pictures, but it’s important to remember the phone’s other limitations. That large sensor adds additional thickness and weight to the device, and Windows Phone itself is still missing some crucial apps to help it compete with iOS and Android. Still, if you’re a serious photographer and need the best camera that can fit in your pocket, then the Lumia 1020 seems like the obvious choice right now.
