Those brainboxes over at The Next Web have used a clever algorithm to calculate how many Windows Phone 7 handsets have been sold until now.
An estimated 3.38 million WP7 handsets have been shifted in total, of which 877,000 were in February alone.
Since launch WP7 has seen a pretty steady growth rate, particularly in terms of app development for the platform. Breaking the 10,000 app mark earlier this week, the mobile OS now has an influx of around 100 apps per day, something vital to a mobile operating systems’ success.
Given that WP7 entered into such a saturated market and one with competitors with strong user bases, the OS has gone from strength to strength.
Android continues to lead the way in terms of smartphone sales, but many it seems are now turning to Microsoft’s OS.
Problems with the WP7 system forced Microsoft to pull the first set of updated handset software from the Samsung Omnia 7. However the long awaited NoDo update is expected to arrive later on this month and should bring with it a host of improvements.
The WP7 UI has been given plenty of praise for its design and ease of use, it does however lag somewhat behind in terms of functionality when compared to competitors. Fingers crossed that the rumoured late 2011 multitasking update brings with it the functionality the OS needs to build on current sales success.
