HTC continue their good track record for updating their phones to the latest version of Android, having confirmed that the HTC Desire range, and just-in-store Incredible S, which was released last week.
The Desire, Desire HD, Desire Z and Incredible S will all be getting bumped up to Android 2.3, Gingerbread.
Gingerbread brings a darker, greener colour-scheme to the Android phone experience, as well as promising considerable performance boosts to both speed and battery life.
We’ve got Google’s Nexus One (also made by HTC) in the office, and we’re still waiting for the over the air (OTA) upgrade promised to be arriving soon. (OTA means your phone network will send the upgrade goodness without any data charges or need to connect to a computer.)
We’ll discuss other visible changes between Froyo and Gingerbread after we get a chance to play around with it.
The original Desire has now run Android since version 2.1, so that’s Eclair (both versions), Froyo and soon, Gingerbread.
It’ll be interesting to see how the ageing HTC phones compare to their replacements. The next generation of phones announced in Barcelona in February, including the Desire S, Wildfire S and the ChaCha, are all set to come with Gingerbread, so we should be able to easily see the difference in hardware, and whether it’ll be worth buying an upgrade.
HTC have said to expect the upgrades to arrive in Q2, so that’ll be anytime from the start of April. Get ready to start impatiently checking your phone for updates!
