The ZenPad tablet family were just unveiled during the Asus’ ‘Zensation’ event at Computex in Taipei.
The effervescent Asus Chairman, Jonney Shih was busy at today’s Computex event, introducing the world to his company’s newest repertoire of products, including an attractive assortment of new ZenPad tablets set to replace the current family of MeMO Pad devices.
Whilst we’re familiar with the company’s ZenFone sub-category of devices, the ZenPad moniker is new to our ears and at launch is comprised of 7, 8 and 10.1-inch Android tablets. Whilst the focus across the board appears to be premium design, strong screens and a solid multimedia experience, the second of the company’s two upcoming 8-inch tablets is taking the spotlight.
The ZenPad S 8.0 adopts the slickest design, borrowing from the company’s ZenBook laptop family with a metallic finish and the characteristic hairline pattern along with diamond-cut edges and a waistline of just 6.6mm (that’s only a snip thicker than the class-leaders; the iPad Air 2 and the Xperia Z4 Tablet). The thing also weighs 298 grams.
To complement the good looks of the chassis, the 8-inch 4:3 display rocks an insanely sharp 324ppi, thanks to a 2K QXGA resolution and it’ll also reportedly offer insanely good viewing angles, reiterating Asus’ focus on delivering a killer multimedia experience.
As with the majority of the MeMO Pad devices before it and its ZenPad brethren, the S 8.0 will be powered by Intel silicon. A 64-bit Intel Atom Z3580 will be running the show and it’ll be helped along by a generous about of RAM too (4GB) which should ensure rock solid performance for everything from multitasking, gaming and HD video playback. Speaking of video and media in general, this is also one of the first slates to boast DTS sound, available from its front-facing stereo speakers.
Taking the fight to the likes of Microsoft’s Surface, the newly announced Z Stylus will also play nice with the star tablet, boasting high accuracy from a 1.2mm nip and a 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity, great from the ever-growing range of art apps that help match the likes of Paper on iOS.
The ZenPad S 8.0 joins its launch party as being on offer in WiFi, 3G/4G connectivity configurations, as well as a few colours. You’ll also find storage up to 64GB with microSD expandability and beyond that we’re still waiting to hear about a UK launch date.
