New iPhone 5 set for summer launch?

The new Apple iPhone 5 is currently ready for production, sporting a new phone factor and ready for a summer launch, according to an employee from the company that makes the phones.

9to5 Mac has been tipped off by an employee of Foxconn that iPhone 5 is ‘gearing up for production.’ Interestingly there are several versions of the hardware in circulation, so it sounds like Apple hasn’t decided – or is keeping quiet about the finished product.

All the samples purportedly have a 4-inch display (one of which is made by LG), this ties in to rumours we’ve heard about a 4-inch display being manufacturer by Sony and Hitachi, along with a higher resolution.

Unsurprisingly it will take a different form factor from the iPhone 4/4S, following a symmetrical rather than teardrop shape.

Interestingly, last year iPhone 4S production started late spring 2011, before launching around five months later in October. So if production for the current iPhone is starting now, if we fast forward five months it may launch at the world wide developers conference in June.

Of course this is a rumour at the moment, but the same Foxcomm source also tipped off 9to5 Mac last year that the new iPhone would be an iPhone 4S instead of iPhone 5.

We’ll bring you more news and juicy rumours when we get them, in the mean time check out our favourite iPhone 5 concept.
